'Scalebound' Possibly Back In Development As Microsoft Renews Trademark

Earlier this year, fans were taken by surprise when Microsoft Studios made the announcement that Scalebound was canceled. The action-heavy adventure title was a collaboration between Microsoft and Platinum Games and was supposedly helmed by Hideki Kamiya. Surprisingly, reports have confirmed that the developer has processed the renewal for the game's trademark. This has led to several speculations as to what plans the company has for the title.

Reports indicate that the trademark renewal for Scalebound was originally discovered by a Twitter user called y2konya. The details of the reported IP renewal can be found on the Justia Trademarks website. Sources have confirmed that there were no activities from when it was canceled last October until earlier this month. It seems that Microsoft has filed a second trademark extension for the brand. What was also interesting is that the trademark was not in any danger of being unregistered.

Based on their records, the Scalebound trademark is solely owned by Microsoft Studios, which had gamers wondering why they proceeded with a renewal. Speculations have also started to claim that they are working with a new developer this time around. Another rumor claims that the company is planning to revisit the game under a new title later in the future. Moreover, it is also possible that they want to prevent other companies from using the same name, says IGN.

As previously reported,Scalebound encountered several development delays related to its game engine. Microsoft apparently stopped its development last January and began to scrub any mention of the game from its social media platforms. News of its cancellation prompted several backlashes from fans and other games industry publications. The game's director Hideki Kamiya even issued a public apology for the game's cancellation.

However, there are rumors that Microsoft might have plans to surprise fans during their E3 2017 press conference. The highlight will most likely be the official unveiling of their new flagship console, the Project Scorpio. Fans are definitely hoping the Scalebound will also be announced and confirmed to be back in development.
