X, Elon Musk Comply with Brazil’s Order to Block Accounts in a Move to Remove Ban

Almost a month after Brazil's Supreme Court issued a ban against X, Elon Musk and his platform are now looking to lift the ban by going back on its word. According to a new report, X is now working on ways to comply with Brazil's order, which asked the company to block certain accounts on the platform spreading far-right ideals and misinformation.

Elon Musk and X famously challenged Brazil's order, and it did not look good for the company as its operations ultimately suffered from it.

Reuters shared that X is now working on complying with the order of Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, specifically the blocking of certain accounts on the platform. Musk and X previously went against this as the platform upheld its belief in free speech in the month that it was banned.

As of press time, there is no information on which specific accounts are to be banned, but it has been assumed that this will include supporters of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, who incited a call to arms and attacked the Brazilian Congress. It has also been speculated that the accounts of those who threatened federal police officers who were part of Bolsonaro's investigation will also be banned.

Brazil's ban against X meant that the social media app is unavailable in the country. However, users have been able to access it via VPNs. Those who will get caught doing so may face fines .

When is X's Ban Going to be Lifted in Brazil?

Justice de Moraes released an order over the weekend that accepted X's plans of resuming its operations in the country, provided that they followed the directives. The Brazilian Supreme Court is now asking for documents that will corroborate X's claims of complying with the court order, which will be the key in its ban getting lifted.

Recently, X has been available in Brazil via Cloudflare, but Musk and his platform were fined with a daily fee of around $900,000 for its operations in the country.

Elon Musk vs. Brazil: The X Free Speech

Earlier this year, Elon Musk and X received a request from Brazil's Supreme Court to ban certain accounts on X due to the significant rise of misinformation and spam behavior related to ex-President Bolsonaro. However, Musk and X famously pushed back against this order and started a fight with Brazil's de Moraes, claiming that it was a move against free speech.

Since stepping in as Twitter's owner, Musk established himself as a "free speech absolutist," and this led to the platform losing many users and advertisers. It also caused him to skate on thin ice with regulators, and this includes the Brazilian government despite gaining popularity among the South American country's citizens.

Musk threw allegations and criticism against de Moraes and Brazil's Supreme Court, claiming that they violated free speech and its citizens' rights by ordering them to close down accounts.
