If you've been itching to switch banks because your current financial institution isn't particularly environmentally friendly, then kudos to you, first of all - and you might want to head over to a local Wells Fargo branch. The San Francisco-based bank announced on Monday that it now offers text message receipts at all 12,000 of its ATMs.
Wells Fargo is apparently the first bank to offer the service in the US and says it was also first to introduce e-receipts in 2010. Its ATMs already provide several paperless receipt options, which customers have been quick to embrace. The bank notes that one of the most popular "green" options is still "No Receipt."
"We are excited to offer yet another 'green' choice and additional convenience to our customers when it comes to getting their banking done," said Alicia Moore, head of Wells Fargo ATM banking. "Today almost half of all receipt eligible transactions at the ATM result in customers selecting an e-receipt or not printing a receipt. Our customers tell us they appreciate the ability to reduce paper waste - text receipts just give them one more option."
According to Wells Fargo, the new text message service is both a response to positive customer feedback for its existing e-receipt options, as well as a reflection of the bank's commitment to environmentally friendly policies.
"We seek to be environmentally minded in all we do," said Mary Wenzel, Wells Fargo head of environmental affairs. "We're offering more options to our customers to reduce waste and preserve resources where we can."
The bank said the text message receipts are sent within minutes of a transaction and will specify the account that was used, available balance, time and date, as well as a description of the charge and an identification number for the ATM.
Wells Fargo customers who wish to opt in to the new service can do so at a branch location, through the company's webpage or by calling the customer service line.
