Are you one of those fortunate enough to play Sega's Streets of Rage back when it was one of the hit games in the early 90s or through emulators, then you know how iconic and memorable it is. And if you wondered what the game would look like when it is made into a movie, then fret no more.
"John Wick" movies screenwriter Derek Kolstad is confirmed to be working on a movie adaptation of Streets of Rage, per Deadline.
As the movie is still in the early stages of development, the movie's production team and its producers did not share a definite release date for the movie.
'Streets of Rage' Movie Production Details
According to Deadline's article, "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie producer dj2 Entertainment and the Equalizer franchise's producer, Escape Artists, will act as producers for the film adaptation.
The movie is said to be the latest video game movie adaptation under dj2 Entertainment's belt following the impressive box office performance of "Sonic the Hedgehog 2."
According to Deadline's unnamed sources, Kolstad, who is famous for his writing on the "John Wick" movies and "Just Watch Me" starring Gerard Butler, wrote the script "on spec." This Hollywood jargon means that Kolstad wrote the movie's script without being asked and sent it to the studio, according to Kotaku.
Engadget believes that the resulting movie adaptation of the hit 90s game will have "a serious potential" to draw crowds in these types of movies as they draw from people's nostalgia for the 80s and 90s, as evidenced by the impressive success of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie series.
Kolstad is represented by the Agency For The Performing Arts (APA), Circle of Confusion, and Behr Abramson Levy while Cowan, Dabaets, Abrahams & Sheppard LLP represents dj2 Entertainment alongside the APA.
Streets of Rage History
For those who are unfamiliar with the game the movie is based on, Streets of Rage, also known as Bare Knuckle: furious Iron Fist in Japan, was released in 1991 by Sega for the Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, and Virtual Console.
The game features the story of three former police officers, Adam Hunter, Axel Stone, and Blaze Fielding, as they try to counter and resist The Syndicate, a criminal organization that has absorbed Wood Oak City's government, causing crime and corruption to skyrocket.
Streets of Rage is a sidescrolling action game where enemies approach the player characters from both sides of the screen and other locations occasionally. Players must defeat all opponents to progress through eight locations, known as rounds in-game. A boss fight awaits players at the end of each round, except for the seventh.
To defeat enemies and bosses alike, players can pick up items that could either heal them after taking damage, gain points, or harm enemies.
The game suffered a two-decade-long hiatus period following the controversial third installment of the series but was revived after the release of Streets of Rage 4.
