'The Conjuring' (2013)

In any fair assessment, James Wan is at the very least an above-average horror film director. He has directed a fair share of movies, but "The Conjuring" cannot be denied as the Wan representative because it is by far the scariest of all his feature movies. "The Conjuring" has a knack of defying expectations about when and where the scares would occur. Its haunted house/possession plot is nothing new, but few films in this genre have had half the style that Wan infused into an old, creaking farmstead in Rhode Island.

'Annabelle: Creation' (2017)

Others say that the 2017 prequel is one of the best films in the "Conjuring" franchise. Director David F. Sandberg's movie follows the story of how the haunted doll acquired her supernatural abilities and includes some tremendously powerful horror set pieces, including an unforgettable scare in a Rhode Island barn.

'#Alive' (2020)

This Korean zombie film became an unexpected hit on Netflix when it was released at the height of the pandemic, but the truth is that it might have succeeded even without the "timeliness" of the story of a man trapped in his apartment during the apocalypse. This is a smart and fast-paced modern zombie film that alternates building tension with brilliant action scenes.

'Army of the Dead' (2021)

Years after his success with a remake of George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead," the divisive Zack Snyder returns to the world of zombie action. Dave Bautista plays the leader of a ragtag group of ex-soldiers entrusted with sneaking into the zombie-infested city of Las Vegas and retrieving millions from a hidden safe under the city.

'The Exorcist' (1973)

Horror fans have no reasons to not watch this movie. In fact, you will hardly find a handful of movies that are more disturbing, impactful, or just terrifying than it. The film repeatedly dampens the audience's and characters' sense of hope, leaving you believing that there's no way that a priest, who isn't very strong in his faith, will be able to save the possessed little girl. Segments like the "demon face" flash on the screen for an eighth of a second, confounding the viewer and giving the idea that you should never, ever let your guard down. It burrows beneath your skin and stays there indefinitely.

'The Babysitter' (2017)

McG's unexpected horror comedy hit was so successful for Netflix that it birthed a sequel, "The Babysitter: Killer Queen," in 2020. Samara Weaving's star potential was immediately apparent in this film. Weaving plays a sociopathic cult member who happens to be a babysitter.

'Girl on the Third Floor' (2019)

Travis Stevens co-wrote and directed this gruesome, clever 2019 horror thriller about a man played by C.M. Punk who renovates an old house in the Chicago suburbs and discovers bad things. It's a film that evokes classic horror films of the 1970s and 1980s in ways we don't see from the genre very often nowadays, with amazing practical effects and a pitch-black sense of humor.
