iPhone Lost in a River Returned to Owner, is Still Working

An iPhone that was lost in the River Wye in the U.K. is still working after being submerged underwater for 10 months.

The owner, Owain Davies, lost the iPhone while he was canoeing in Gloucestershire, according to the report by Digital Trends. Davies told the BBC that he and his partner fell into the river while canoeing. The iPhone, which was in his back pocket, fell out.

Considering the circumstances in while he lost his phone, Davies no longer expected to get it back.

However, a man named Miguel Pacheco eventually found the iPhone while out doing the same activity with his family.

How Miguel Pacheco Got to the iPhone to Work Once More

In the BBC's report, Pacheco noted that the iPhone was so full of water, he did not expect it to work any longer. Still, he made the decision to try and see if it could still turn on.

Per the BBC, "he went to a lot of effort to dry out the phone because there may have been 'sentimental' things on it."

So how did he go about drying a phone that had been submerged in a river for 10 months? Pacheco dried the iPhone out using an airliner as well as a compressor. Once that was done, he placed the device in the airing cupboard overnight.

The next day, he attempted to charge the iPhone and was surprised when it had turned on.

How the iPhone Found Its Way Back to Its Owner

When the device turned on, there were two things that Pacheco saw on the screen. First, he saw a date: August 13. It was the day that the iPhone fell into the river.

Second, he saw a photo of a couple as the phone's wallpaper. According to the report by Digital Trends, he took a photo of it and shared the image on social media. People online kept sharing the image themselves until Miguel Pacheco learned that Owain Davies owned the phone.

Per the BBC report, Davies was "impressed" with the effort Pacheco made to get his iPhone to work again.

How Long iPhones Can Last Underwater, According to Apple

Apple's support page details how long each iPhone model can last underwater and the depth that it can handle. Per the Apple support page, the maximum depth each model can withstand varies but the amount of time is consistent: 30 minutes.

Given this, the fact the Owain Davies' iPhone is still working after 10 months in a river is nothing short of impressive.
