Tesla is looking to produce a smart home HVAC with HEPA filters.
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is an air filtering device popularly known for its capacity to help its users have an improved air quality.
Just recently, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk admitted and confirmed online that the technology is being looked into.
Musk has hinted that the company is still interested in developing its own intelligent and energy-saving HVAC system for residential use, and that this endeavor is "on the product list."
Tesla's HVAC
When announcing that Tesla is working on a software update to make the HVAC system quieter in the new Model S last year, CEO Elon Musk was asked on Twitter about Tesla making a home HVAC system:
"Oh man, home hvac that is super energy efficient, quiet & purifies the air would be great. We developed it for the car, but it can be scaled up for home use."
The CEO has been talking about it for years and strongly hinted that Tesla was working on it at some point, but it sounded like he was still pondering the idea at the time.
It all started with the tweet of Andrej Karpathy, Tesla's Director of AI who recently stepped down on his role in the company.
Karpathy made a comment about air quality. He tweeted, "Obviously ppl should carry a CO2 monitor at all times :) Outside air is ~400ppm, stuffy room ~1000+. CO2 ppm is proxy for how much other people's air you're breathing (~covid risk). Thinking gets hazier at 1000+. Meeting rooms and bedrooms can climb much higher than you'd expect."
The Tesla CEO went to reply to the tweet and agreed with the statement, sharing that he carries a CO2 monitor on his desk and it beeps when ppm>1000.
A Twitter user named Owen Sparks jumped into the conversation and stated, "Please make home HVAC with hepa filter, the allergies are killing me rn."
After a few minutes, the Tesla CEO surprisingly replied and stated that the idea of making a HVAC with HEPA filter is on the product list of the company they are looking into exploring.
Musk replied, "It's on the future product list. Especially important in places like Austin, which has next-level amounts of pollen in the air."
Tesla's HVAC System
Tesla having an interest in developing and producing an HVAC system to assist users in providing quality air is not surprising.
Electrek has reported that the electric vehicle company has made a lot of efforts into improving air quality inside the Tesla cars.
The company even went so far as to integrate a HEPA filter into the HVAC system that is found in some of its more expensive electric cars.
The filter has the potential to remove 99.97 percent of bacteria, pollen, dust, mold, and any other airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (m).
And, it has been integrated into an effective HVAC system in order to prevent the range of its vehicles from being negatively impacted to an excessive degree.
HVAC is used everywhere, it can be commonly seen in both residential homes and commercial buildings. Due to climate change, the extreme heat waves that have been plaguing many parts of the world.
This especially holds true in Texas, Tesla's new headquarters. Musk has mentioned in the past that Tesla will make its own HVAC systems and design them to be extremely energy efficient and add HEPA filters to clean the air.
