Andrej Karpathy, Tesla Director of AI is stepping down from the electric vehicle company.
Karpathy is one of the many people behind the excellence of what has Tesla achieved in its AI and autopilot capabilities today.
Andrej Karpathy has announced his intention to leave the company. He was a senior executive at the electric vehicle manufacturer who specializes in artificial intelligence and was an architect of the company's Autopilot self-driving system.
Tesla Director of AI
In a series of tweets published on Wednesday, July 14, the executive made the announcement of leaving Tesla, where he had worked since 2017.
During his time in the company, Karpathy was in charge of the teams that worked on computer vision, supervising the technology that is incharge of Autopilot.
In addition, he oversaw the teams that were responsible for data labeling and the deployment of the feature.
On Twitter, Karpathy stated:
"It's been a great pleasure to help Tesla towards its goals over the last 5 years and a difficult decision to part ways. In that time, Autopilot graduated from lane keeping to city streets and I look forward to seeing the exceptionally strong Autopilot team continue that momentum."
In this particular tweet, CEO and founder Elon Musk also replied to him saying, "Thanks for everything you have done for Tesla! It has been an honor working with you."
Karpathy continued to state that he does not have any specific plans for the future. He stated that he intends to devote more time to rediscovering my long-term hobbies in the areas of technical work in artificial intelligence (AI), open source, and teaching.
According to Engadget, Karpathy worked as a research scientist for the deep learning program at OpenAI before accepting his current position as Senior Director of AI at Tesla.
He worked on primary areas of expertise were computer vision and generative modeling. Before that, he pursued his PhD education in Stanford University where he became a member of the research team led by Fei-Fei Li at Stanford.
Tesla's Massive Layoff
Tesla reports made it clear to the public the company is also going to layoff employees during this bear market condition.
The Tesla CEO has been quite open about his dissatisfaction with the present condition of the market, which has led him to consider eliminating % of the company's workers.
In preparation for the forthcoming economic downturn, Musk has requested that his employees refrain from recruiting new talent anywhere in the world.
The announcement comes shortly after Tesla's CEO personally ordered all employees to return to the office immediately.
In line with this mandate from Musk, Tesla cancelled its month-long job hunting event in China that was intended for June 16, 23, and 30.
As reported by Bloomberg, this resignation adds to the instability that has been occurring in Tesla's management levels and comes on the heels of a decision to reduce the size of the Autopilot division.
The business lay off more than 200 workers from the Autopilot division and permanently closed its offices in San Mateo, California, earlier this month.
Today saw the departure of more than one executive from Tesla, including Karpathy. Furthermore, it would appear that a senior director focused on DEI has also departed the company.
In addition, Chris Rollins, a senior software manager working in Tesla's energy division. Also, Kristen Kavanaugh, the senior director whose primary focus was on diversity and inclusion, tendered her resignation a month ago.
