Sony took to social media to announce the release window of the highly anticipated VR headset.
On Monday, Sony announced that the PlayStation VR2 headset will arrive "early 2023," taking to social media to announce the release window of the widely anticipated virtual reality headset. Over the last few months, Sony has been sharing hints about the VR headset and fans and users can now set their sights for early next year to get their hands on the PlayStation VR2.
In posts made on Twitter and Instagram, Sony only hinted at the PlayStation VR2 release date but did not mention the price tag. However, The Verge reported that Sony had previously released details of the headset's design earlier this year.
Users can expect the Sony PlayStation VR2 to have a display with up to 4K resolution, with the capability to run at 90 or 120Hz and feature a 110-degree field of view. The upcoming VR headset will also use foveated rendering, meaning some parts of an image will be sharper than others to make processing easier for the PlayStation 5. The VR2 will also seamlessly connect to the console using one USB C cable.
What to Expect from Sony's PlayStation VR2 in 2023
Sony first showed off the PlayStation VR2 in February, highlighting its improved ergonomics and better live streaming capabilities, Engadget reported. The company also added a Cinematic Mode.
In last month's PlayStation blog, Sony said that the new VR2 will feature a 4000 x 2040 resolution at 90/120hz that's equipped with a "see-through mode" safety feature that will prevent players from wandering too far off, much like Meta's Quest Guardian.
Unlike its predecessor, the Sony PlayStation VR2 will no longer use a camera connected to the console to track users' movements. It will instead use an inside-out tracking, powered by cameras on the headset itself. This enables users to see their surroundings while wearing the VR headset.
Sony said that the PlayStation 5 will also let players broadcast themselves while playing VR games as long as they have a PlayStation HD camera connected. The company has already lined up about 20 "major" games when the PlayStation VR2 launches in early 2023, including games set in the Horizon and Walking Dead universes, as well as No Man's Sky and Resident Evil Village VR versions.
Sony PlayStation VR2 Look and Feel
The Sony PlayStation VR2 will also feature orb-shaped controllers that are equipped with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback similar to the company's DualSense controller for the PS5. The virtual reality headset's handpieces will also include finger-touch detection which determines where players rest their thumb, index, or middle fingers without the need for pressing buttons.
The upcoming Sony PlayStation VR2 will only be compatible with the PS5, which was released in November 2020 and has been difficult to find in stores since then. But Sony has been issuing restocks, enabling more players to get their hands on the latest console.
The Sony PlayStation VR2 may also go up against Meta's "Project Cambria" headset, which will be released later this year. Apple is also rumored to present their own mixed reality headset in January 2023.
