Robert Kyncl, an executive at YouTube, has announced his intention to leave the company in the early part of 2023.
After working for the company for more than a decade, YouTube executive Robert Kyncl recently made the announcement that he will be leaving the most popular video sharing platform company.
Kyncl held the position of chief business officer at YouTube, where he contributed to the company's growth into a multibillion-dollar behemoth.
The company has confirmed that at the beginning of October, Mary Ellen Coe, who currently serves as the President of global customer solutions for Google, will assume the role of Chief Business Officer at YouTube.
Kyncl will maintain a temporary presence on YouTube in order to assist with the transition.
Departure of YouTube CBO Robert Kyncl
YouTube's CEO, Susan Wojcicki, announced the departure of the CBO through a memo sent to the company's staff.
Variety was able to obtain a copy. The memo stated, "After 12 years of building YouTube's business organization into the powerhouse that it is today, with a talented global team, millions of successful creators, and strong partnerships with many industries, Robert has decided to leave YouTube in 2023 to start the next chapter in his career."
During his leadership, YouTube established new partnerships and relationships within the music industry, traditional media, and technology, as well as within their creator ecosystem.
It was also under Kyncl's leadership that the term "YouTuber" was coined and became mainstream, used in everyday conversation.
In addition, YouTube was able to pay more than $30 billion to content creators, media companies, and artists over the course of the past three years thanks to his leadership of the company.
The CEO of YouTube further stated that they owe a significant portion of their growth and impact to Robert's leadership.
Before beginning his tenure at YouTube, Kyncl served as the vice president of content at Netflix for nearly eight years, leaving that position in the third quarter of 2010.
As a result of his time spent working at Netflix and YouTube, Kyncl has become a highly sought-after resource for legacy media executives such as Bob Iger, a former CEO of Disney, who are in the process of shifting the focus of their companies to direct-to-consumer streaming services.
Kyncl shared the news on Twitter, captioning, "YouTube is a great place to be at, and a great place to be from! After 12 incredible years, I've decided to move on to the next challenge soon."
He added, "Working alongside creators, artists, media and music companies to transform media has been a privilege."
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki retweeted the post, expressing gratitude for the contribution the former CBO had made to the company.
YouTube's Newest CBO
Mary Ellen Coe, who has worked for Google for the past ten years, will reportedly take over as chief business officer after Kyncl steps down from the position, as reported by CNBC.
Coe started working at Google in 2012. Since early 2017, Coe has been working as Google's president of global customer solutions.
Before coming to work for Google, Coe spent the previous 12 years as a partner at McKinsey & Company, where she provided consulting services to businesses in the media, consumer goods, and technology industries.
She is currently a member of the board of directors at Merck & Co. and was a member of the board of directors at Whole Foods prior to Amazon's acquisition of the supermarket chain.
