Analyst Hints New Ultra-Wide Camera With Larger Pixels in iPhone 14 Pro Models

The unveiling of the new generation of iPhone is just around the corner. Next week, on September 7, Apple will finally launch the iPhone 14 models.

Over the past months, rumors have been circulating that iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will have an improved camera.

Just recently, reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the upcoming models would have a new ultra-wide lens resulting in larger pixels, as per 9to5Mac.

New Camera Upgrade of iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max Are Best for Low-Light Environment

Both iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will have new ultra-wide lenses with a larger sensor, according to Kuo.

A larger sensor means that users can capture images with "more light and less noise," making it a great camera for low-light environments.

The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, which are the latest iPhones in the market, only have a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. This is equipped only with 1.0µm (micrometer) pixels.

Now, instead of the present 12-megapixel ultrawide camera sensor, Apple will be putting a sensor that has 40% larger pixels in the new iPhone 14 Pro models.

Meanwhile, instead of 1.0µm, the ultrawide lens on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models will have 1.4µm pixels, according to the analyst.

This will allow the Pro models to "collect way more photons in the same low-light scenario" than the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, as per Phone Arena.

According to Phone Arena, in addition to "quadrupling the camera resolution" of the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max cameras to 48MP, the 8K video capturing abilities will be added to the new models.

Users can also expect that the camera of the new iPhone 14 Pro models will have a larger f/1.9 aperture sensor with autofocus. The output is better images despite the low-light environment.

High Component Costs Possibly Behind Price Increase

Sony, Minebea, VCM, Largan, and LG Innotek will be behind the components for the new iPhone 14 Pro's ultra-wide camera, according to Kuo.

Moreover, he added that Sony would be responsible for the sensor, Minebea and Largan will work on the voice coil monitor, and LG will be behind the actual camera module packaging, according to Phone Arena.

However, the camera upgrade means that the pricing of these iPhone Pro 14 models will be greatly affected.

The 48MP main camera sensor is already expensive by itself. In addition to this, for the new sensor from Sony, Apple is expected to invest an additional 70% more.

For the voice coil monitors from Largan and Minebea, an additional 45% increase is expected, and another 40% more is needed for LG's camera module packaging.

The increase in the iPhone 14 Pro models' components' prices may be the reason why Apple is adding $100 more to the prices of the said phones.

Other upgrades will be available to iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max such, as a new A16 processor. On September 16, Apple will start shipping the iPhone 14 Pro models.
