A hacker accessed several of Rockstar Games' GTA 6 files and shared it to the public.
On Sunday morning, a hacker who used the handle "teapotuberhacker" leaked dozens of videos from a test build of Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto installment, GTA 6. The hacker reportedly accessed the gaming studio's Slack server and Confluence wiki, gaining access to an array of files and videos of gameplay of the upcoming action adventure game that is still currently under development.
According to Bleeping Computer, the GTA 6 source code and videos of its gameplay first appeared on GTAForums on Sunday morning, where a user called "teapotuberhacker" posted a link to a RAR archive that included up to 90 videos stolen from Rockstar Games. The videos are allegedly created by GTA 6 developers who were debugging the game's features, such as camera tracking, NPC tracking, and different parts of Vice City, where the game is set. Some videos also featured voice overs of conversations between the main playable character and NPCs.
Hacker Threatens Extortion Against Rockstar Games Over Stolen GTA 6 Data
In a post in the forum, the threat actor said he had stolen "All source code and assets for GTA 5" as well as "GTA 6 docs." They confirmed that while the GTA 6 is not for sale at the moment, they are accepting offers of at least $10,000 for the GTA 5 source code and assets and encouraged those who are interested to get in touch, the report said.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier took to Twitter on Sunday to report that he had gotten in touch with Rockstar Games to confirm the "massive" GTA 6 leak was in fact real. Schreier added that while the gameplay footage is yet unfinished, "This is one of the biggest leaks in video game history and a nightmare" for the gaming studio.
The recent GTA 6 leak gave fans a glimpse of two new playable protagonists, including a female character named Lucia. What to Expect in 'GTA 6' Based on the Rockstar Games Leak
SVG broke down the GTA 6 leak and outlined several interesting details about the upcoming action adventure games. First of all, Vice City, where the game is set, is actually a returning venue for the game, as it already appeared back in 2002. Another interesting detail is that GTA 6 will see the return of a female playable protagonist, this time in the form of Lucia. The last time a playable female protagonist was made available was during the game's debut back in November 1997.
The GTA 6 leak showed an array of videos, but some that caught the most attention was the combat scenes, which according to the report showed a major improvement from the last iteration of the game. It also appears that developers have added the ability of characters to go prone, which is a major addition to combat.
In July, The Verge reported that Rockstar Games is looking to release GTA 6 in March 2024. It is unclear how the recent leak affects the studio's timelines.
