Netflix has been reshaping its app this year more than most. Many features both additions and changes are slowly being implemented. They have just announced another one wherein users can now transfer their profiles to other accounts, according to The Verge.
Profile Transfer
This is useful for those who want to make a new account but don't want to leave their watch history behind. Each Netflix profile has saved information like "Continue Watching" and "My List," which would be hard to replicate without the Profile Transfer feature.
Also, each profile runs an algorithm for TV shows and movie suggestions and recommendations depending on what you have rated and what you have watched. That is hours upon hours of screen time that you have culminated.
Other than the convenience for Netflix users, the streaming company may also be using this feature to transition easier for their other plans. They have been testing it out since March in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.
Soon enough, the feature will be used worldwide. Once the feature becomes available, the user can go to their profile icon and click the option for profile transfer. As for Netflix's other plans, they are already planning to launch an "add an extra home" feature to the account to reel in more profits.
Account Sharing
Netflix has announced that they would be testing password-sharing features, wherein an account user would need a verification code to log in. This is in line with the streaming service's plan to implement additional fees for sharing the service outside the household.
This might be bad news for freeloaders since an additional fee might be a deal breaker for those who provide an account for free. For Netflix's Standard and Premium accounts, subscribers can add sub-accounts to the service for people outside the household. The subs will also have their own profile, as well as their own Netflix login and password.
For the sub-accounts to be activated, the main account owner will receive a verification code to confirm that the additional devices are authorized to be a part of the main account. So far, the cost of the additional account is $2.99.
The bill will not be separate even if the sub-account does have a different login and password. It will still be deducted from the main account's chosen method of payment, as mentioned in Tech Crunch.
Why is Netflix Implementing These Features?
It's probably because of the decline in subscribers which has been continuing lately. The streaming service has seen its lowest subscriber growth in years, and the year-end quarter revenue has been low.
This could also be due to the rising number of competitors. There have many streaming services that offer better titles at a lower cost. There have also been some complaints about Netflix removing titles that they like to fund original movies that aren't as good as the ones that were sacrificed.
