5 Pokemon World Records You Probably Didn't Know Existed

Pokemon is, without a doubt, one of the most well-known media franchises in the world. The franchise began with the video games published by Nintendo before eventually branching out to include movies, a trading card game, and of course, the anime.

Considering the scope of the media franchise and the fact that there are more than 900 Pokemon species in the lore, it probably comes as no surprise that there are a number of Pokemon-related Guinness World Records that have been made.

Here are some examples of the Pokemon world records you might not even know existed:

This record belong to Articuno, who was obtained by a player from the United States named Kaitlyn Covey. However, this came to be because of a mistake on the part of Niantic.

According to the Guinness World Records, Covey "was mistakenly sent an Articuno by Niantic" on August 2, 2016. The first legendary Pokemon to be officially released for Pokemon GO is actually Lugia.

Considering that they are the three starter Pokemon of Kanto that featured in many video games, you might have guessed either Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle to be the first ever Pokemon character. That is actually not the case.

The first ever Pokemon character, as recorded by the Guinness World Records, is actually Rhydon. Designed by artist Ken Sugimori, Rhydon made its first appearance "in the original Red/Green/Blue versions of the RPG video game."

We won't blame you if the first Pokemon that came to mind is Pikachu. Unfortunately, if Pikachu is your guess as the first Pokemon character to be trademarked, you are actually wrong.

According to the Guinness World Records, the distinction of being the first Pokemon character to be trademarked actually goes to Mew. The trademark for Mew is actually the first to be applied for and likewise the first to be registered.

The application took place on May 9, 1990, while the registration was done on March 31, 1994.

Most Pokemon Identified in One Minute

Many of us think that a minute is not a very long time. However, it apparently is enough time to name 80 of the more the 900 Pokemon species that exists.

The holder of the Guinness World Record for the most number of Pokemon identified in one minute is Jack Taylor, who is from the United Kingdom. The record of 80 identified Pokemon was achieved on August 18, 2022.
