Samsung's TV Plus offers Samsung TV users hundreds of free channels in exchange for a few ads, and now, the tech company plans to put its ad-supported streaming app on other TV brands as well.
From Samsung and Beyond
Samsung TV Plus has been around since 2015. The free ad-supported streaming service or FAST is already pre-installed on the latest Samsung TVs, giving access to shows like "Top Gear," "Law & Order Special Victims Unit," "NCIS," and "Chicago Fire."
Depending on the location, it also comes with local and nationwide news, as well as Samsung-exclusive channels like Ride or Drive and The Movie Hub. Reaching 24 countries, Samsung has 1,600 channels overall with 220 in the US.
According to Janko Roettgers, Samsung initially planned on licensing channels to other TV manufacturers, but the idea did not take off. The company instead offered the TV Plus app to other brands, although they still have competition in terms of FAST services.
As mentioned in The Verge, TCL, LG, and Vizio have their own streaming apps. There are also other FAST services like Pluto TV, Peacock, Tubi, Roku, and Amazon Freevee. With all that being said, it's not guaranteed that other brands will use Samsung's TV Plus in the first place.
Factoring in Samsung success in 2022, it could be enough for TV manufacturers to add its services. The company claims that viewers streamed 3 billion house worldwide. Data suggests that the FAST market in the US is growing and expected to bring $9 billion in revenue by 2026.
