Valorant first came out back in June 2020, but it's okay if you're only joining in now. There have been many updates and additions since its release, and if you're just starting out, it's better to get used to a few agents first.
Agent Classes
Before we dive into it, you need to know about the four agent classes. There are Controllers, Dueslists, Initiators, and Sentinels. Each class has a role to play, so you have to choose which one fits your skillset best.
Controllers are meant to use their abilities to well, control the area. This can give your team a significant advantage if you block off sites so enemies won't be able to spot you from a distance or will be reluctant to enter the site.
Duelists are the more engaging type, which is best used for offensive tactics. Their abilities are usually meant to disable or just kill the enemy. They're usually the ones who enter the site first to clear it out for the others.
Initiators play more of a scouting role since they try to determine whether there are enemies on the site. Their abilities can detect enemies or disrupt them so duelists can go in and wreak havoc on the opposing team.
Sentinels are good for defense. Their role is to protect the site so enemies can't easily barge in and attack the team. They usually have abilities that can slow enemies down, block them off, or stop enemies from pushing the site.

Agent Suggestions on Different Maps
- Lotus, Haven, and Ascent
These are two of the maps that have many halls and corners to watch out for. Although all agent types are important, it's best to use a Controller for this map if you're new. You can use Harbor to cover many points at once by curving his high tide ability.
Using a Controller will lessen the anxiety of watching out all entry points to make sure no one will push when you're defending. You can also use your abilities to cover areas so your team can push the site without receiving too much damage.
- Pearl, Icebox, and Ascent
For this map, Initiators will be your best bet, especially with agents that have long-distance scouting abilities like Sova or KAY/O. Especially in B Site, where it's hard to enter when you're on the offensive since it's a long way to B Site in Pearl and you are vulnerable to sniper attacks.
There are also a lot of hiding places in Icebox that might get you killed as you check each of them. An Initiator will help draw them out so you won't be ambushed as you push the site. If you're new and still a little nervous, this way might ease your fears.
- Lotus and Haven
Although you can also use Controllers for these maps, Sentinels can prove to be more useful, especially since it has three sites. There are only five agents per team, so there will always be someone who will defend one site on their own.
The best agent to use for this is Killjoy or Sage. They're easy to use so you won't have to worry about complex controls. You can use KJ's turret to help you shoot at enemies, or use Sage's wall to redirect them to other sites where there are more people guarding them.
- Ascent, Bind, Lotus
If you're not afraid to be the first to enter, you might want to use a Dueslist. Although if you're new, you might not be as accurate as you like with aiming yet, so it's better to do so in maps with small spaces. Maps like Ascent, Bind, and Lotus tend to have many corners and camping sites so you can attack enemies in close range.
