Apple recently rolled out a firmware update for AirPods, including AirPods Max and AirPods Pro. The Cupertino tech giant also updated the firmware support document for the wireless gadget, which now has a suggestion for AirPods users who can't update their devices' firmware version because there are no other Apple devices nearby.
AirPods Users Can Go to the Nearest Apple Store to Initiate Firmware Update
As reported by MacRumors, Apple now has a solution for AirPods users to get a firmware update without using a linked iPhone, iPad or MacBook - they can simply go to the nearest Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update their AirPods' firmware version.
"If you don't have an Apple device nearby, you can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware," Apple's support document states. As noted by 9to5Mac, AirPods cannot update their firmware by themselves, unlike other Apple devices that would only require connecting to the Internet to install the latest updates. The AirPods must be charging and within range of another Apple device to update the firmware version.
AirPods cannot have a firmware update with the use of a non-Apple device. With Apple's latest recommendation, it would appear that the Big Tech is giving an instruction to AirPods users who are using them with Android or Windows gadgets. This also applies to users with an iPhone, iPad or Mac but are unable to update their AirPods' firmware for some reason. The fact that Apple added this recommendation to its support document means that many AirPods users fall into these categories.

Airpods Users Request for Better Implementation of Firmware Updates
Despite the solution offered by Apple, 9to5Mac still believes that the current firmware update system for the wireless earphones needs to be improved. For one, the firmware update cannot be initiated manually as users will need to link their AirPods with an Apple device. AirPods cannot even be forced to undergo an update. It also doesn't help that Apple doesn't have release notes for the latest firmware versions for AirPods, unlike the iOS, macOS and watchOS updates.
Furthermore, 9to5Mac argued that going to the nearest Apple retail store is still inconvenient. It would be much easier for Android and Windows users to update their AirPods' firmware version with the use of a dedicated firmware update app. However, Apple has yet to release an AirPods management app for non-Apple gadgets.
The latest AirPods firmware version 5E133 was released today, which include bug fixes and system improvements for the AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max. Users may check their AirPods' current firmware version using the management tool from a linked Apple device. This can be done by going to the linked device's Settings, Bluetooth, and then tapping on the "i" button next to the linked AirPods.
