Spotify Updates Its Desktop App with New Features

It has been a while since Spotify has updated its desktop app. Lately, it's more about new features for the mobile app or putting out fires that certain podcasters keep starting. The good news is, the company is finally giving the desktop app some love.

What's New with Spotify on Desktop?

The experience with the desktop app is already good enough, but the little extra features don't hurt either. While the usual parts of the Spotify experience remain unchanged such as the recommended songs and menu for browsing, Spotify added new shortcuts.

For one, the app's left window now has a "Your Library" feature, making it easier to get to your saved music, podcast collections, playlists, and liked songs. The window won't bother you the entire time as well since you can collapse it by clicking on the menu.

In its collapsed state, the topmost part will only show the icon for the library, while the rest would show the album cover or icons of playlists, podcasts, liked songs, etc. Spotify has been testing the features for a few months.

The right side of the window now has a "Now Playing" view, which gives listeners information about the content that's currently playing as well as biographical information about the artist or person behind the content, as mentioned by Engadget.

Additional information such as upcoming tour dates and direct access to the artist's merchandise is also included. As for podcasts, some have the ability to display a transcript of the episode while you listen, like subtitles.

If you're wondering where the "Friend Activity" window went, it has been moved to the top-right corner of the app, next to your profile photo. Clicking on it will display the songs your friends are currently listening to, which you can collapse any time you want.

Other than that, the app has also adopted a more colorful theme, which makes it more similar to the smartphone app version. The update has already been launched globally instead of gradually rolling it out, so you can go ahead and check it for yourself.

Spotify Informs You of Upcoming Live Events

Other than adding ticket offers to "Now Playing," Spotify is beginning in more ways to let listeners know if their favorite artists have an ongoing or upcoming live event in their area. This way, they won't miss out on music experiences they might not hear about.

Artists can start adding concert dates on top of their Spotify profiles, which will soon be added to their "This Is" playlists as well. This will help musicians and other content creators promote their shows on the app and connect with their listeners and fans.

The Live Events Feed, which is an in-app concert destination, makes it easier to find concert listings in your area. It can also be adjusted if you choose to tune in to concerts in other locations. By clicking on the "Interested" button, you can tag the events you'd want to attend.
