PlayStation Through the Years, Explained

PlayStations has been a homegrown name for consoles for more than 25 years. Since 1994, Sony was able to release various generations of PlayStation, cementing its name as one of the most successful gaming consoles.

In July, PlayStation 5 (PS5) has reportedly crossed 40 million units sold globally. Regardless, Sony assured that PS5 is well-stocked and can supply the surge of demand to the console.

In celebration of a new milestone for PlayStation's history, here is a look back to the history of an iconic gaming console.

PS One (1994 & 2000)

The PS One was initially launched in Japan in 1994, equipped with the controller and memory card. However, in 2000 Sony redesigned the console and made it smaller with a DualShock controller and maintaining the memory card.

PlayStation 2 (2000)

The PS2 is a bigger version of the first one known for its backwards compatibility with original PlayStation games. In addition, PS2 was offered in different colors like red, yellow, purple, and more.

Sony also released an optional accessory of 40GB hard drive that allows the machine boost loading games.

PlayStation Portable (2004 & 2007)

PSP is the first hand-held console within the PS lineup, in an attempt to compete with the popularity of Nintendo DS. The console proved to be a hit specially for gamers who wants to play anytime and anywhere.

In 2007, Sony release the PSP 2000, a slimmer and faster model with output compatibility to television and USB charging mode.

Other portable versions are PSP 3000 in 2008, PSP Go in 2009, PSP E1000 in 2011, and PS Vita (2012).

PlayStation 3 (2006, 2009, 2012)

The first PS3 featured a 20GB and 60GB backward compatibility hard drive. However, it was soon dropped due to the decreasing demand for PS2 game titles.

Like the other models, Sony also released a slim and super slim version of the PS3 that boasted its Blu-ray capabilities.

PlayStation 4 (2013)

Sony launched the PS4 during the height of consoles like Xbox and Wii. To compete in the market, PS4 brought major design enhancements like 4K resolution playback.

Currently, the PS4 remains to be popular among gamers and has not seen any decline despite PS5's launched in 2020.

PlayStation 5 (2020)

The newest console is equipped with AMD CPU and GPU technology which gives a 4K gaming with 60FPS and 120FPS experience.

The PS5 also has SSD storage and expandable space.

Currently, there are rumors about the upgraded variants of PS5 but Sony is yet to confirm or announce its launch.
