WhatsApp users may now send video messages to each other.
The company behind the popular secure messaging app is officially releasing its upcoming video message feature, which the company developed in mid-June.
The ability to send video messages is one of the latest features WhatsApp is working on to improve users' experience with the app.
Reacting In Real-Time
WhatsApp users (and instant messaging app users in general) are familiar with the feature that allows them to send audio messages to people through the app. While this feature is handy for instantly replying to a message, it lacks the "real-time" feel other users are looking for.
Fortunately, WhatsApp has a solution to that issue. Its latest blog post reveals it is adding a video message feature that allows users to send 60-second video messages instead of audio ones through WhatsApp.
According to WABetaInfo, who first reported about the feature, Whatsapp's upcoming new feature works just like when they're sending an audio message. Users must tap the microphone icon once within a conversation to turn it into a camera. Once that's done, they can tap and hold the camera button to begin recording their video message; letting it go will send the video message automatically.
WhatsApp also revealed in its blog post that recording a video message hands-free is possible. Users only need to swipe the camera icon up to lock and record their video message hands-free.
The publication believes that WhatsApp users can use this feature as a way to share memorable moments, along with genuine emotions that only videos can convey. These moments include wishing someone a happy birthday, laughing at a joke, or bringing good news.
Users won't need to worry about the video message being outside WhatsApp's secure network - much like audio messages, they're end-to-end encrypted from sender to recipient.
While WhatsApp mentioned it is rolling out its video messaging feature to the public, there will be people that have yet to receive it on their devices. As such, these users will have to wait a bit more over the coming weeks to get the feature on their devices.
Other Upcoming WhatsApp Features
WhatsApp's new video messaging feature is one of many the company is developing and working on. As of press time, WhatsApp is testing a feature that brings improved profile icons within its group chats, giving users without profile pictures easily distinguishable ones in group chats.
it is also developing a feature that allows users to send animated avatar stickers to other WhatsApp users.
Furthermore, WhatsApp users can expect the app to have a feature called "phone number privacy," which will hide their phone numbers when they add a reaction to a group message.
New features aren't the only thing WhatsApp is developing. The company also released a fix to its buggy Emoji Keyboard as a result of the beta test of its app's new interface for the security notifications screen of its Android app.
