Gmail mobile users will never need to use translation sites ever again.
Google recently announced it is adding a built-in translation feature to its Gmail mobile app, giving users a way to translate emails written in a different language natively.
Google previously released its built-in translation feature on Gmail's web version but interestingly left out its mobile version until now.
Gmail Translation Woes No More
Gmail users going through their email through its mobile app were in a pinch. They have to use Google Translate or third-party translation programs/sites to figure out what an email written in a foreign language is trying to say.
The process could take a while depending on the speed of their internet connection. While this process is a good solution, it doesn't address the root problem - Gmail not having a built-in translator for users to use for such emails.
Thankfully, Google has heard its users' plight for long enough. According to the company's Google Workspace Updates blog, Gmail mobile app users can translate emails written in a foreign language from the app itself starting today.
Google revealed it added a native translation integration within Gmail's mobile app that enables users to "seamlessly communicate in a wide range of languages." As a result, Gmail mobile users no longer have to go to Google Translate or any other translation program/site to understand what these emails say anymore.
Gmail mobile users can see this feature in action through a dismissible banner appearing when an email's content language is different from the "Google.com Mail display language" in their account settings. They can even choose to have Gmail always translate or never translate specific languages - a boon for multilingual people.
Much like its web counterpart, the built-in translator of Gmail's mobile app supports more than 100 languages across different parts of the world, per XDA Developers. As such, mobile users wouldn't need to hop to their desktop/laptop to see affected emails on Gmail's web version.
If the dismissible banner didn't appear for whatever reason, Gmail mobile users can tap on the three-dot menu and select the option to translate the email manually.
Gmail Built-in Translation Release Details
Unfortunately, Gmail's built-in translation feature might not be available for some users despite Google's announcement. According to Android Police, Google is gradually rolling out the feature to users worldwide, though some might want to wait for two weeks before they have it.
Android users get the feature first, with Google rolling it out on Aug. 8 up until Aug. 23. Meanwhile, iOS users will get the feature later than expected; Google will roll out the feature for them between Aug. 21 and Sept. 5.
It is unknown if the feature supports outdated smartphone firmware. However, Google assured that the feature is available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.
Needless to say, users must update their Gmail mobile app to get its built-in translator on their phones.
