Amazon One Enterprise Repackages Palm-Scanning Technology

Initially introduced to grocery stores in 2020, Amazon designed its palm-scanning technology as a way for shoppers to pay by swiping their hands on the machine. The technology has been used by several Fresh supermarkets, Whole Foods grocery stores, and some Go convenience marts.

Amazon One Enterprise relaunched the technology to fit the needs of companies to identify and authenticate their corporate employees' entrances. Using the palm scanner, employees will have access to offices and other sensitive data and records from the companies, if permitted.

Companies such as IGH Hotels & Resorts, Boon Edamn, and Kone have already signed up for its release. According to Amazon, this will serve as a cheaper yet more secure solution for enterprises.

"Businesses appreciate the privacy and convenience for their users, who can access physical locations and software assets with just a hover of their palm," VP for Amazon Web Services, Dilip Kumar stated.

Advocacy Groups Voice Concern on Privacy, Security

The company defined the technology as a cheaper and more secure solution compared to the traditional security and authentication tools. Despite that, advocacy groups are still worried about privacy and security, citing the increased surveillance of employees.

Amazon argued that palm recognition provided more privacy than other biometric systems. Moreover, the company also claimed that it does not gather purchase data from scans collected by non-Amazon stores.

Currently, Amazon has been making moves to focus its ventures by providing services and tools for enterprises. This includes Astro for Business, Amazon Q AI assistant, and more.
