HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’ Spin-Off About Lord Corlys Velaryon Will Be Animated

The "Game of Thrones" universe continues to expand well after "House of the Dragon," with several spinoffs in the works. However, the franchise is changing its format when it comes to the telling of Lord Corlys Velaryon's story, which will be animated.

Lord Velaryon in 'Nine Voyages'

Many agree that "House of the Dragon" has an abundance of interesting characters, and we'll get to see a closer look at Lord Corlys velaryon's legacy as "Nine Voyages" delves into the events that earned the sea-bound Valyrian the name "Sea Snake."

Initially, it was supposed to be a live-action series, just like the base show where Lord Corlys was first introduced. However, the source material's author, George R.R. Martin, announced that the TV show will instead be animated due to "budgetary constraints," as per Screen Rant.

Since it will follow the acts of Lord Velaryon that earned him his recognition, it will be set before the events of "House of the Dragon," making it a prequel to a prequel. The Lord of the Tides will embark towards Westeros in the story.

Not much has been released about the show, and it might not be the only "Game of Thrones" show that will hit the screen in the following years. There have been talks about a spinoff for "Game of Thrones" as well called "Snow."

With the self-explanatory title, it will focus on the Stark-Targaryen descendant, Jon Snow, who was later revealed to be Aegon Targaryen. The news about the spinoff was first surfaced back in 2022. Since then there has been a lot of supporting information that points to it becoming a reality.

As per The Direct, it has already been confirmed that Kit Harrington will reprise his role as Jon Snow if the show does reach production. In fact, reports say that the spinoff is already in early development.

George R.R. Martin said that it was Kit Harrington himself who suggested the idea, even bringing his own team of writers and showrunners and that they were terrific. Hopefully, the show gets greenlit by HBO to help with the unsatisfying ending that was given to the character.

'The Witcher' Gets an Animated Film

"Game of Thrones" is not the only fantasy franchise that is expanding its content into animation. Netflix's "The Witcher" franchise already has experience with this as it released "The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf," which tells the story of a young Vesemir.

Given that the show has received praise from its fans, unlike how "The Witcher: Blood Origin," it makes sense that Netflix will lean towards this format. Titled "The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep," the show is set to be released this 2024.

What's more exciting is that it is set to be voiced by Doug Cockle, who you might know as the voice of Geralt in the games. You'll also be recognizing familiar voices such as Anya Charlotra as Yennefer and Joey Batey as Jaskier, both of whom play the mentioned roles in the live-action series.
