X competitor, Bluesky, had just debuted but the app had already gained almost 800,000 new users upon its launch and is expected to reach four million sign-ups as of writing.
Last year, Bluesky was introduced and was opened in an invite-only beta.
BlueSky's Successful Launch
Like Meta's Threads, the new X competitor had its share of huge success upon launch. According to the public data, Bluesky's unique user count almost doubled once it was released to the public.
Despite its ongoing growth, BlueSky's reach is still considered small when compared to its competitors like Mastodon which has around 8.7 million users. In addition, Threads is still popular with around 130 million users.
BlueSky's launch also met with some challenges like outages. The user-generated customed algorithmic feeds have stopped working as confirmed by CEO Jay Graber. According to him, each feed is running on all sorts of different backend setups.
BlueSky Supports Online Transparency
Although some users think that BlueSky's design is similar to the good old Twitter, now X, these two social media are powered by different goals. When BlueSky was first introduced it promised to revolutionize social media through decentralization.
This means that BlueSky users have more control over their feed and allows interoperability for cross-posting between different apps. Due to its nature, BlueSky aims to reduce censorship on the platform.
So far, the outages are understandable for the new users due to the surge of new accounts. "When there's a large increase in database usage, the system enters a multi-polar tachyon flow which overloads the power couplings, which we all just experienced," BlueSky engineer Paul Frazee wrote.
