The social media platform Bluesky has reached 2 million users with more plans for the app to become "a truly open social network."
The Bluesky Team announced on Friday goals to release a public web version at the end of the month and a federation feature by next year.
Bluesky said its "biggest priority" is its federation phase, allowing users to have the "freedom to choose" outside of the "whims of private companies or black box algorithms."
The feature is made possible via private servers users can set up via Bluesky's AT Protocol network.
The "billionaire-proof" feature lets users migrate their contacts and saved posts to other social media platforms.
Bluesky's user growth follows after its biggest rival, X, suffered a revenue loss, and Meta's Thread has had a rapid-fire release of features in the past months.
Bluesky hit its 1 million users just a month ago.
Bluesky Features to Look Out for in the Future
Along with its major plans for this month and next year, the social media app listed down other minor updates the app will have soon.
Rolling out some of the "much-requested features," the app now has the following:
- Push notifications options
- Shareable user lists
- Email 24A verification
- Media and Likes tab on the profile
- Lesser loading time
- Recommended follows
- Accessibility improvements
Bluesky plans to launch more features in the future as it gears for bigger audiences and accelerated growth, competing with other decentralized social media platforms.
Mastodon currently is the largest decentralized social network on the internet with over 14 million accounts and a monthly 1.8 million active userbase.
Elon Musk's X Rivals on the Rise
Other social media platforms intended to replace X (formerly Twitter) have been on the rise since Elon Musk took over.
The growth of these platforms is attributed to the lowering user base of the social media giant.
Recent news noted several large companies are pulling their advertisements from X for appearing next to antisemitic posts. This includes IBM, Apple, Lionsgate, Disney, and more.
