We have been waiting for the official announcement of the second season's release ever since rumors have been floating around about the matter. With the official confirmation, the rumors are proven to be accurate and we will see the fate of the Targaryens soon enough.
'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Release
The last episode of the "Game of Thrones" prequel left us all in suspense after a tragic turn of events that left the rightful ruler grieving. The show was released in 2022, and we are now a few months away from finding out what happens next.
Warner Bros. Discovery Executive J.B. Perrette said in an interview that confirmed that the second season will arrive this June. It will immediately start off where the story ended in the first season, as reported by Screen Rant.
Sadly for fans who want a specific date, that is yet to be announced. There are a few things that have already been revealed about season 2 such as having eight episodes instead of 10 like the previous season. Naturally, it will follow the civil war between the Targaryen families.
It will explain how dragons suddenly went extinct in Westeros. Mainly, it will explore what happens between the opposing families, dubbed as the Greens and the Blacks, the Greens being the Hightowers and the Blacks being Targaryens and Velaryons.
If you happen to have forgotten the previous season's events, Rhaenyra, who was initially leaning towards a more peaceful approach to ending the rivalry between the Greens and the Blacks, has opted to fight after the death of her son, Lucerys.
He was killed in what was shown to be an accident, as Aemond chased Lucerys while they were both on dragonback. Aemond's dragon, Vhagar, was exponentially larger than Arrax, which was Lucerys'. As the one-eyed dragon rider failed to control his dragon, Vhagar ended up killing Lucerys.
By the end of "House of the Dragon" season 1, Rhaenyra Targaryen was seen mourning her son's tragic demise, showing anger in her eyes and teasing what viewers can expect in the upcoming season.
What to Expect
With the war brewing in Westeros, houses will be forced to choose sides, which means that fans will be seeing the ancestors of familiar characters from "Game of Thrones." The Greens, for instance, will have the support of House Lannister, House Baratheon, and the remaining members of House Strong.
On Rhaenyra's side, they will be joined by House Arryn, House Frey, House Greyjoy, House Tarly, House Stark, and House Velaryon, according to Collider. House Tully and House Tyrell are trying to stay out of the conflict, it seems, although it might be different in the show.
With the first episode reportedly titled "A Son for a Son," the show might initially focus on the Blacks getting revenge for the loss of Lucerys, potentially aiming for the death of one of Alicent Hightower's sons. In the book, Daemon is successful in this endeavor, managing to hire someone to assassinate one of Aegon's sons.
