Google Wallet is reportedly adding a PIN code requirement on tap-to-pay transactions for Wear OS, as the company attempts to strengthen security.
Some users have reported the possible feature but it could either still rolling out or just a bug with the app.
Google Wallet Enhances Payment Experience
Earlier this week, Google announced that it will implement a new authentication update to improve the in-store payment experience using the Wallet app. Users will have to confirm their identity either by PIN, pattern, thumbprint, or Class 3 biometric unlock.
Google also clarified that users can disable the additional verification for contactless payments on transit fares. In addition, the verification can last for a couple of transactions to avoid repetitive actions from the users.
"Once the verification has timed out, you must verify again for your next transaction," Google explained. Users are given three minutes from the initial unlock before it will be required to reauthenticate the transaction.
Google to Strengthen Security on Wear OS Transactions
Wear OS devices are designed to work seamlessly with Google Wallet. Users of Pixel Watch can pay directly from their devices and add their credit or debit cards for contactless payments.
However, the rumored feature suggests that the first tap will fail unless the user opens the app first through the app grid. Google's recent announcement on Wallet does not explicitly specify the affected devices but many are assuming that it's primarily for smartphones.
On the other hand, Wear OS users are not fans of the possible update. Some smartwatch users also prefer to have an unlocking feature using the fingerprint instead of asking them to enter a PIN code on a small screen.
Google Wallet does not support Class 1 or Class 2 biometric unlock or any screen locks like Smart Unlock or Knock to Unlock.
