Netflix reportedly dismissed "The Witcher" spin-off that was supposed to focus on the band of misfits that Ciri joined at the end of Season 3.
The filming of "The Rats", named after the group's identity, was shortened after the decision to insert the filmed scenes into Season 4 flashbacks.
Netflix Scraps 'The Rats', Shifts Into Season 4 Focus
"The Rats" was planned to be a prequel series that will feature six to eight episodes. The production was already filming for two months, securing footage enough for one to two episodes.
The spin-off was supposed to film for six months to complete the episodes. However, Netflix reportedly decided to fuse the footage into Season 4.
In a report by Redanian Intelligence, the series was codenamed under Riff Raf and was created by "The Witcher" writer Haily Hall. The story was supposed to follow six teenage thieves who plan for their biggest heist against the most dangerous crime ring in the kingdom.
'The Witcher' Ends After Five Seasons
Netflix announced that "The Witcher" was renewed for its fifth and final season. Previously, the show met criticism after replacing Henry Cavill from its titular role. Starting Season 4, Geralt of Rivia will be played by Liam Hemsworth.
According to the announcement, the production for the Season 4 has already started. Behind-the-scenes photos of the table read showed the new and returning cast members that will be seen from the show.
The two seasons will be filmed back-to-back and are expected to cover the remainder books of Andrzej Sapkowski. This includes the narrative from "Baptism of Fire," "The Tower of the Swallow," and "Lady of the Lake."
"It wouldn't be our show if we didn't push our family of characters to their absolute limit - stay tuned to see how the story ends," said Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, showrunner and executive producer for the show.
