OpenAI's Sora Featured in First AI-Generated Music Video

OpenAI's Sora, its latest text-to-vide generator, has finally made its debut music video following the release of indie pop artist Washed Out's newest song, "The Hardest Part."

The music video, which was released on Wednesday, features four minutes and two seconds of transitioning clips made entirely out of OpenAI's video generator.

According to the music video's director Paul Trillo, the whole sequence took more than 55 individual clips stitched together to create via Adobe Premiere.

The director-producer touted the project as "an idea I had almost 10 years ago and then abandoned," only to be revived thanks to the capabilities of AI technology.

Trillo has been using various AI generators to produce short-film content since May last year and was among the first testers of Sora AI when it came out last February.

This was the first time the AI video generator was commissioned by an actual music artist, marking the industry's clear steps towards the use of more generative AI in production.

Generative AI Increases Presence in Music Industry

The release of "The Hardest Part" came at a time when the music industry's attention on AI was starting to get bigger.

Just last week, Drake, one of the prominent figures in the modern rapping scene, was caught in controversy following the release of his latest diss track against fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar.

The diss track, "Taylor Made Freestyle" features AI-generated voices of the late Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg, two rap legends idolized by Lamar.

Shakur's estate later requested Drake to take down the diss track on X (formerly Twitter) as it was a "blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time."

Several other musicians like "KISS" have earlier announced the debut of their replicas as the original band members are heading towards retirement.

Of course, OpenAI itself was reportedly discussing with Hollywood studio executives a possible venture into the entertainment industry.

Music Artists Raise Concern on AI Presence in the Industry

Despite the industry's positive outlook towards technology, more music artists are coming out to express concerns about its increasing presence in music production.

Several notable singers like Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, Nicki Minal, and 200 more artists have signed an open letter demanding better protections against the advent of AI.

One of the petitions raised was to address the "enormous threats" posed by the technology to the artists' and their teams' privacy, safety, and livelihood.
