There have been countless idiotic challenges on social media that have caused those who participated in them to get hurt in the process. Some even suffer the worst consequences and end up dying as a result. You'd think that eating something extremely spicy it relatively tame compared to others, but it might just be as bad.
One Chip Challenge Contributes to Teen's Death
TikTok has some kind of trend where people push their limits by eating tons of spicy food. One product in particular that stands out in this phenomenon is the Paqui One Chip Challenge chip, which has caused countless creators to turn red and cry real tears.
Tragically, one teen from Worcester, Massachusetts decided to try the chip himself and ended up losing his life for it. 14-year-old Harris Wolobah was picked up from school by her mother, Lois Wolobah after the nurse called her out of concern. The teen lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital immediately.
It was too late for Harris as he died not long after in the hospital. As it turns out, the teen already had a heart condition that may have been worsened by the ingestion of a large dose of capsaicin, which is the compound that peppers have that gives off the heat.
In the autopsy report, Harris' official cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest, which was due to his condition of having an enlarged heart and myocardial bridging, and "the setting of recent ingestion of food substance with high capsaicin concentration," as per Ars Technica.
Tufts Medical Center Chief of Cardiology Dr. James Udelson said: "It is possible that with significant stimulation of the heart, the muscle beyond the bridge suddenly had abnormal blood flow and could have been a cause of a severe arrhythmia."
Harris' heart defect made the ingestion of high amounts of capsaicin more dangerous than it already was, but it can still be lethal to anyone who has a healthy heart. Studies have found that it can even cause neurological symptoms.
In case you're unfamiliar with the Paqui One Chip Challenge, it is a single chip wrapped in tin foil and is seasoned with two of the hottest peppers in the world, which are the Naga Viper pepper and the Carolina Reaper pepper.

Be Careful What You Participate In
TikTok has been the starting ground for many challenges that any logical human would not do. There is one where people would hold their breath until they passed out and another where they would eat Tide Pods because they looked edible.
Arguably the worst of all is the trend where people would break into cars and use phone chargers to start the vehicle called the Kia challenge. There have been a lot of reports of car thefts at the height of the challenge, with one case resulting in the death of teens.
As reported by AP News, six teens rode a previously reported stolen Kiat Sportage and crashed the car on Route 33 in Buffalo. The incident led to the death of four teens, and the 16-year-old behind the wheel pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges.
