AirTag 2 Rumors Suggest Mid-Year Launch in 2025

The next-generation AirTag is reportedly scheduled for a release in the middle of 2025 with a possible launch date around the same time as the original AirTag.

The first-generation AirTag has been available in the market for three years already after it was released in April 2021.

Apple Might Release AirTag 2 in 2025

In a Bloomberg report, Mark Gurman revealed that Apple is planning to launch the second generation AirTag next year, around the same month as the original. In addition, the company has been testing with its Asian partners toward its 2025 target.

Gurman shared that major upgrades will be introduced to AirTag 2, considering its much-awaited release. The device is expected to have a "better chip with improved location tracking," hinting at the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chip from iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, and Ultra 2 models.

The current AirTags limits the distance to around 10 meters only. The potential use of the UWB chip will extend its reach for up to 60 meters. The same chip was used on iPhones to enable new features like Precision Finding.

AirTag Raises Privacy, Stalking Concerns

Despite its promising feature, Apple has been facing a class-action lawsuit due to the increasing stalking-related cases using AirTags. The tech giant's request to dismiss the suit was denied by the U.S. Federal Court.

According to the ruling judge, the plaintiffs provided significant evidence of negligence and product liability on Apple. AirTags, which are designed to locate misplaced items, are being used by criminals to stalk other people.

In 2023, AirTag-related cases of stalking have increased. The $29 tracking device has been linked to serious incidents that resulted in physical and mental damage to victims.

Apple has yet to address some of the privacy concerns related to its tracking device. More details are expected about AirTag 2 once the launch is confirmed.
