There Won’t Be a Jason Vorhees Slasher Reboot Anytime Soon, Co-Creator Says

You don't have to be a fan of the horror genre in films to recognize names like Pennywise, Valak, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Michael Myers, or Jason Vorhees. Their films are so popular that you don't have to watch them to know all about them. Unfortunately, there are no plans to reboot "Friday the 13th" just yet.

It Might Be Three More Years At Least

"Friday the 13th" is among the cult classics that you would normally play during Halloween, and it's still popular even though it has been over four decades old. You would think that a famous franchise would encourage any studio to create a reboot or another movie, but that's not the case.

The co-creator of the film series Sean Cunningham was asked why there hasn't been a Jason Vorhees-centric film in a while. Surprisingly, the film director said that it was out of fear of the reboot bot being profitable for the studio that would back it.

As per Gizmodo, Cunningham said that with whatever studio the project might land on, they "might not see a huge return on its investment." Furthermore, he said that it might be another three years for another movie if there will be one at all.

The very first film was released back in 1980, which makes the horror franchise very successful considering how long it has been releasing related films since then. The last launched movie was of the same title back in 2009.

Since the first, there have been 12 films in the series, including crossovers with other horror film villains like Freddy Krueger in "Freddy vs. Jason." Some would even argue that his constant resurrection is starting to become more ridiculous after every film.

Still, there are several ways that the franchise can be revived without having to bring out the original killer. After all, it was not Jason who was the main slasher in the first film but his mother, and he merely took up the role after she was killed.

Besides, his fate has already been stretched far out of the franchise's premise when they decided to involve cryonic suspension and sending the killer to space, where he continues his murder spree in a spacecraft. Believe it or not, he was then turned into a cyborg.

If anything, the new norm in the film industry as well as the emergence of so many reboots of old franchises should be taken advantage of. It affords the franchise a fresh new start, where they can perhaps steer clear of turning a resurrected killer into a space cyborg.

Jason Vorhees Heads to Gaming

In case you don't know, there's actually a game called Friday the 13th: The Game which is a third-person survival game. Players can either be the camp counselor, who needs to escape the slasher, or Jason himself as they track down and hunt the counselors.

He would even be a playable character in MultiVersus, which is a free-to-play crossover fighting game by Player First Games, although it won't be launched until next week. Until then, you can try the first mentioned game where you can choose to become the killer or the hunted.
