Disconnect from Internet

Immediately disconnect your device from the internet to prevent any further interaction with the malicious link. This will stop any data transmission that could potentially hack your data.

It is also better to close the browser tab and window immediately. If the browser suddenly becomes unresponsive, there is an option to force quit the app.

Never Enter Any Information

This is the most important step. No matter what happens, never input your personal information. Any link that redirects you to fill up a form or a webpage that requests further information from you should not be followed.

Several victims have reported falling to the trick after entering their personal information. Most of the victims shared that they input their data upon receiving an email or message that impersonated a legitimate company.

Always verify if it's the official contact of the company before interacting with the message.

Cleanup System

After doing the previous steps, perform a full system scan. Most phones have built-in antivirus software that you can utilize. In addition, you can also install an anti-malware app.

Make sure to clear your browser cache, cookies, and history. Remove any suspicious links that could be harmful data.

Change and Upgrade Passwords

Immediately change the passwords for any accounts that might have been compromised. You can start with your email, bank accounts, and social media handles. In this way, it would be harder for the hackers to access your data once again.

Aside from creating a stronger password. You can enable the two-factor authentication on your accounts. This will add an extra layer of security which will notify you of any movement on your account.

Monitor Accounts

Keep a close eye on your accounts for any unusual activity. Regardless, you must report the malicious link to the appropriate authorities. Several companies accept reports and could ban the accounts from performing the same act again.

Over the next hours and days, observe your device for any unusual behavior. Signs of existing malware include slow performance and unexpected popping of ads.

Backup Data

Regularly back up your important data to an external drive and cloud services to protect against data loss. This will also give you more confidence to format the device in case of extreme measures.

Afterward, take your experience as an educational moment. Share the tips with other people, especially the older generation as they are more vulnerable to these types of threats.
