Snapchat Lets You Use Gen AI to Create New Backgrounds, Outfits in Real Time

With several apps now having their own AI features, the next thing to do for companies is to make sure they have unique functions that will make them stand out. Snapchat understands that well enough as it released a new AI feature for the app.

Snapchat's Real-Time GenAI

One of the things that made Snapchat popular is the AR lenses they have to offer. Users are always excited to use new ones to see how they work, but it has always been limited to what Snapchat released until now.

With the new generative AI feature, users will be able to create their own AR filters using text prompts, and it can change several aspects of the real-time shot such as clothes and background, as reported by The Verge

That means that Snapchat now has virtually unlimited filters, and it is only limited by a user's imagination. In the early look examples, users can opt for a "50s sci-fi film" filter and they will get a futuristic background and the shiny but elegant outfit most classic sci-fi movies have.

For now, the AI feature is still in development, but it is expected to arrive in the coming months. Creators can even start making lenses with the same model by the end of 2024 for those who don't feel like creating custom ones themselves.

Immersive ML Effect

The text prompt-based filter is only the upcoming release as the site already has other innovative tools like the Immersive ML Effect, where the AR Creator Community can generate custom ML models and assets for lenses.

"We want to empower anyone to express themselves through the tools in Lens Studio, and the GenAI Suite adds new capabilities to unleash new dimensions of creativity," the blog post states, wherein creators can make filters in the form of unique art styles.

The company has collaborated with London's National Portrait Gallery to create lenses inspired by iconic portrait styles using the GenAI Suite. Users can take a photo using the filter, and they can submit it to the museum's "Living Portrait" projection wall.

As for creators, they can mix custom ML models with additional AR features to create various looks for lenses. GenAI Suite is actually part of Snapchat's new Lens Studio 5.0 release, which provides new tools for developing more projects in Snapchat.

Lens Studio 5.0

Back in November 2023, the company announced that they were rewriting Lens Studio and launched the beta version of Lens Studio 5.0. Since the official release, Snapchat says that it has been the go-to Snap AR development platform.

"Lens Studio now features a plugin system that enables developers to extend Editor capabilities to fit their needs. It's also a more supportive platform for team development and advanced creation, with extensive support for JavaScript, TypeScript, Version Control, and package management."

Some of the AR functions that are already available to both creators and users include Snap's AI assistant, ML Face Effects, 3D asset, Head Morph, and many others. It's likely that the site will develop more AI features in the future.
