The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced that AI song generators Suno and Udio are being sued for copyright infringement by big recording companies.
The lawsuit was filed by the Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records, citing alleged exploitation of works from popular artists like Mariah Carey.

Suno, Udio Face Copyright Infringement Lawsuit
A case was filed in federal court in Boston for Suno AI while the case for Uncharted Labs, developer of Udio AI was filed in New York. Suno defended that its technology prohibits the utilization of specific artists as references.
Suno AI CEO Mikey Shulman stated that its platform is "designed to generate completely new outputs, not to memorize and regurgitate pre-existing content." He also revealed that the company attempted to explain the details to the recording labels to avoid misunderstanding.
Meanwhile, Udio has yet to respond to the lawsuit. Both AI companies are facing accusations of exploiting the works of popular artists to power their technology, resulting in copyright infringement.
Music Industry Continues Battle With Generative AI
AI has been a heated debacle in the entertainment industry. In a written statement, RIAA chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier stated that while the music industry is open to collaboration with responsible AI developers, unlicensed services are continuously rampant.
Glazier also revealed that Suno and Udio are both unlicensed platforms, citing that they have no fair claim to exploit any artist's life's work to gain profit without permission.
Previously, an open letter, signed by over 200 artists, called out AI companies to stop using AI to infringe their life's work. The petition also called for the companies to stop devaluing the rights of human artists.
Legislation under Tenessee was passed to protect artists and music industry professionals against the potential harm of AI. The goal of the state is to prohibit companies from creating AI tools that can replicate an artist's voice without permission.
