Netflix’s ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Will Introduce Norse Gods to the Story

It's been too long since the first season of "The Sandman" was released and fans have been waiting for the next one. Now that it's just a month away, some of the new characters are already being revealed, and they are literally godly.

Norse Gods in 'The Sandman'

New cast members have already been announced by Netflix through X, and while some of them you may not recognize, others have already been popularized by either famous franchises or well-known mythologies in history.

Three of the most interesting new characters to be introduced in the series would be the three Norse gods, Odin, Thor, and Loki. Showrunner Allan Heinberg said himself that Dream will come face-to-face with the "formidable rulers of Hell, Asgard, Faerie, and the realms beyond."

Odin's role will fall on Clive Russel who played Brynden Tully in "Game of Thrones," Thor will be played by Laurence O'Fuarain, who was Fjall in "The Witcher: Blood Origin," and Loki will be Freddie Fox, who landed the role of Gwayne Hightower in "House of the Dragon."

Since Heinberg also mentioned creatures from other realms like Faerie and Hell, you can expect more characters than just the three. Ruairi O'Connor, for instance, will be playing Orpheus, who is described as the son of Dream and Calliope, as per Tudum.

There's also Nuala and Cluracan played by Ann Skelly and Douglas Booth, respectively. They are siblings who serve as royal emissaries from the court of Faerie. Another character from the same realm is Puck, played by Jack Gleeson, who is said to be a malevolent hobgoblin.

Author Neil Gaiman has a liking to a particular character, Wanda, who will be played by Indya Moore. "Wanda began for me in 1988, because I had trans friends and was not seeing them reflected in the comics I was reading."

He then created a trans woman in a mainstream comic for the first time. "For over three decades, people have been telling me that she was an inspiration to them. I'm thrilled that, 35 years later, she's on the screen in all her glory."

Portrayal of the Norse Gods

We don't know yet if the show will portray the characters accurately based on the book written by Neil Gaiman called "Norse Mythology." If so, Thor won't be the blond-haired man with the six-pack, but rather red-haired along with a plump belly full of mead.

Even in the comics, Thor was a large man with a bushy red-haired beard and untamed hair. The Endless are already powerful enough in their own right, as shown in "The Sandman" as Dream had control over The Dreaming. The Norse Gods, however, may just be as formidable.

Odin, for instance, sacrificed his eye to see everything that happens in the nine realms. An all-seeing god can prove to be a difficult foe to beat, especially if he has a powerful god of thunder by his side. Loki being the cunning trickster that he is, can also cause all sorts of trouble for the second season.
