TikTok is facing another case of misinformation as several influencers declare the harmful effects of using sunscreen amid the heat wave across the U.S.
U.S. dermatologists revealed that several posts are dismissing the true effects and impacts of sun protection, posing as skin care hacks on the platform.
TikTok Influencers Campaign Against Sunscreen Use
A viral TikTok video from "transformation coach" Jerome Tan advised that eating natural foods will allow the body to create its "own sunscreen" and dismissed the use of commercial cream. Several similar videos are also made by other creators, increasing the misinformation online.
The Orlando Health Cancer Institute reported that one in seven American adults aged under 35 has a negative perception of daily sunscreen use. They often believe that sunscreen is more harmful than direct sun exposure, while others believe that hydration can prevent sunburn.
"I see easily six patients per week that are anti-sunscreen, where it used to be maybe one every other week or one a month. And now it's just gotten crazy," said Dr. Jeanine Downie, a board-certified dermatologist to CBS News Confirmed.
Gen Z Follows Anti-Sunscreen Trends, Survey Reveals
Teens are more reliant on social media trends and often treat them as a source of health information, as observed by Dr. Rajesh Nair during patient consultations. The surgical oncologist developed a survey to test American Gen Z about their sun protection knowledge.
The survey revealed that 37% of Gen Z respondents only used sunscreen after being told by other people while 30% of them believe that safe tanning exists if you don't burn.
However, dermatologists explained that there is no "safe tan" and the body starts to tan once there is DNA damage. The DNA mutations caused by sun exposure can lead to skin cancer and premature aging.
Dermatologists are now actively fighting misinformation on TikTok and are advising people to wear any sunscreen, especially when going outside.
