Apple Wallet ID Support is Coming to 2 States After California Addition

A new round of support for digital IDs is coming for Apple Wallet's platform, and this is after it recently announced support for Apple's base of operations, California. It was revealed that the tech giant is planning to add more support for digital IDs in two new states, and Apple has been in talks with the said regions to gain the support and work out the kinks needed in this upcoming addition.

An unnamed source (via 9to5Mac) revealed that the Cupertino giant is now working with two new states that would allow them to store their citizen ID cards as a digital copy of the Apple Wallet app. These states were said to be Iowa and Tennessee, and this is despite both regions having their own form of digital ID implementation.

Iowa already offers digital IDs for smart devices via its app, but is not yet available on the Apple Wallet app. On the other hand, Tennessee is currently working on this development to offer soon to its residents.

With these developments, it was revealed that Iowa has already reached an agreement with Apple to bring digital ID support to the Wallet app, while Tennessee is said to have eventually seen eye-to-eye with the tech giant.

Should this development continue, there will be two new states where Apple Wallet can store digital IDs, but there are no timelines yet as to when it will be available.

California Now Supports Apple Wallet IDs

This latest integration for digital IDs on Apple Wallet saw its most recent deal take place, and it is in the home state of the Cupertino-based company, which is California.

Because of this, users would be able to store their state IDs and driver's licenses in the Apple Wallet and use them for checkpoints, but it was advised to still bring their physical ID cards with them.

Digital IDs Stored on Smartphone Wallets

It was in 2021 when Apple revealed the iOS 15 at its annual WWDC event. The company also announced the first round of support for storing digital IDs in the Apple Wallet app. However, it was revealed by Apple that it was still working with state regulators and terminals to accept this new mode of presenting identification, especially as it is not yet widely adopted.

The initial rollout of this experience was massive, as it announced eight states that have offered support for Apple Wallet's digital IDs, including Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah.

However, it is not only for state IDs as Purdue University previously announced the capability to store school ID badges on Apple Wallet for both the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Despite Apple's previous announcement, its support for Iowa state IDs for Apple Wallet has not yet been finalized to this day, but that is coming soon, according to the latest reports. California will soon get its Apple Wallet support, and it will be followed by two new states that are currently working on this development with Cupertino, soon arriving in Tennessee and Iowa.
