Netflix Unveils First Trailer for 'Uglies' Movie Adaptation

Netflix released the first trailer for the movie adaptation of the sci-fi novel "Uglies" written by Scott Westerfield and starring Joey King.

The film is scheduled to be released on the streaming platform on September 13.

'Uglies' Took 20 Years in Development for a Movie

The film rights for "Uglies" was given to the 20th Century Fox in 2006. However, the project only started its development in 2020 after King was tapped for the lead role.

"Uglies" is set in a dystopian society wherein everyone is forced to be pretty through cosmetic surgery. Every time a person hits the age of 16, they are forced to get rid of any physical differences based on the ideal beauty standard of society.

King will play the role of Tally Youngblood who will defy the against the community's standard. The film is expected to explore themes of change, targeting the emotions often felt by young adults.

Joey King Reveals Preparation for 'Uglies'

King shared that she wanted to play Tally's character since she was 11 years old. The actress revealed that she first read "Uglies" after her sister recommended the book to her.

The actress ended up liking the story and after a few years, she found herself playing the role. King is also an executive producer for the adaptation which helped the film to be made.

King also stated that "Uglies" has the power to discuss a relevant topic among young adults.

"It's a commentary on what we're experiencing today, where so many people can't just take a photograph and post it on social media. You've got to put it through the filter, you've got to edit it, you've got to do the thing to present this idealized version of beauty," McG added.
