Verizon drops data throttling scheme, doubles data in MORE Everything shared plans

After being pressured by the FCC, Verizon Wireless ultimately changed its mind in regards to its planned data throttling for unlimited data users.

Verizon Wireless planned to start its data throttling this month, limiting the speed for users on unlimited data plans with too heavy consumption. The reasoning behind this measure was that it put too much strain on the network, but these plans to start throttling data stirred severe criticism.

The carrier's plans for data throttling also drew the attention of the FCC, which pressured Verizon Wireless to re-think its decision. It now seems that consumer backlash and FCC pressure were just what Verizon needed to come to its senses, as Big Red has now announced that it has decided to go for a different approach.

Instead of throttling data, Verizon has increased the data allocation for shared plans in the MORE Everything suite, offering 15GB of data per month for $110 and 30GB of data per month for $130. Starting with Thursday, Oct. 2, Verizon customers with monthly data allowances of between 20 and 50GB will be also be able to double their consumption, depending on how much they choose to add, for the same price, "the best ever from Verizon." Interested customers who want to take advantage of these offers must do so before Oct. 31.

Moreover, customers who go for Verizon Edge when purchasing or upgrading their smartphone using these promotions, as well as those who bring their own device, can add those devices to More Everything plans for $15 monthly access.

"We know that no matter how much data you have, it's only as good as the network it's on, and Verizon Wireless' network is second to none," Verizon chief marketing officer Ken Dixon said in the press release. "We know our customers - from families to businesses - crave more data to help them keep up with their busy lifestyles, and these new promotions, together with offers like our industry-leading trade-in program, give them even more during the month of October."

While talk and text options are still unlimited, however, Verizon is no longer offering unlimited data. This means that even though the carrier is not moving forward with its data throttling plans, customers will still not be able to enjoy unlimited data anymore.
