Samsung launches four limited-edition Galaxy Alpha designer models with leather back panels

Samsung just launched four limited-edition Galaxy Alpha designer models that boast handmade leather back panels, aiming to offer a more stylish look for fashion-conscious smartphone shoppers.

If you're feeling extra fancy this holiday season and have a soft spot for leather cases, this may be your chance. These limited-edition models launched in France for €649 (about $792) and only 100 units are available for each version. Moreover, each unit will come with a certificate of authenticity.

These four new Galaxy Alpha models look like crocodile leather, although Samsung has not detailed the exact materials used for the casings.

As a reminder, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha made its debut back in August as the company's first metal-clad smartphone, finally moving away from Samsung's infamous love of plastic. The handset stirred lots of interest due to its design, although its specifications are not all that impressive. The company is now once again banking on design with its latest Galaxy Alpha models.

Samsung teamed up with two fashion brands - FREE LANCE and Jean-Baptiste Rautureau - to offer the limited-edition Galaxy Alpha models. FREE LANCE handled the two models for women, while JB Rautureau created the other two models for men, notes the company. Other than the leather back cases, these models come with the exact same specifications as the regular Samsung Galaxy Alpha.

As a reminder, the handset features a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and packs an octa-core chipset under the hood, paired with 2GB of RAM. Other specs include 32GB of internal storage capacity, but with no microSD support for additional memory. The Galaxy Alpha further sports a 12-megapixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front shooter, and a 1,860 mAh battery. On the software side, the smartphone comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G LTE, NFC, GPRS/EDGE, and microUSB. Key features also include a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate monitor.

As previously mentioned, the four limited-edition Galaxy Alpha launched in France, but there's no mention at this point when or if they will hit other markets as well.
