Microsoft unveils Windows 10-ready Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL at MWC 2015 (VIDEO)

Microsoft unveiled two new Windows 10-ready handsets at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, introducing the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL.

The two handsets will ship with Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Denim on board out of the box, and will receive an update when Microsoft rolls out its latest Windows 10 operating system.

As its name suggests, the Lumia 640 XL is a phablet with a large display. Otherwise, the two devices are very similar, and neither is the flagship Microsoft Lumia some fans were expecting. Microsoft continues to focus on affordable devices for now, and a flagship smartphone with high-end specs is not expected until the second half of this year.

The company touts that its new Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL are "for the doers," providing great performance although they pack mid-range specifications.

"Doers are the ones who get things done. The ones who act upon their dreams," Microsoft touts in a new press release on Tuesday, March 3. "Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL will help you be a doer, giving you the freedom and flexibility to choose when and where you want to get things done."

Both devices pack quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processors clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage capacity, microSD support for additional memory of up to 128GB, and 30GB of OneDrive cloud storage space.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 sports a 5-inch HD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera with auto focus and LED flash, a 1-megapixel front shooter, and a 2,500 mAh battery.

The larger Lumia 640 XL, meanwhile, features a 5.7-inch HD display, a 13-megapixel rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics, a 5-megapixel front shooter, and a 3,000 mAh battery.

When it comes to pricing and availability, both handsets will make their commercial debut soon, launching in a variety of colors. The Lumia 640 will start its global rollout in April, estimated to cost roughly €139 for the 3G model and €159 for the LTE variant, before taxes and subsidies. Pricing may vary depending on market and operator.

The Lumia 640 XL will come in both single SIM and Smart Dual SIM variants, and will begin its global rollout in March. The phablet is estimated to cost roughly €189 for the 3G models and €219 for the LTE variant, before taxes and subsidies. Pricing may vary depending on market and operator.
