Microsoft Lumia with Snapdragon 810 processor coming this year, says Qualcomm

A Microsoft Lumia flagship with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 810 mobile processor is apparently in the cards, the chipmaker has officially confirmed it.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 is a powerful processor expected to grace a number of high-end flagship smartphones this year. At the same time, the chipmaker recently reckoned that it has lost a major smartphone customer for the processor, and Samsung is most likely the culprit. That announcement came after rumors indicated that Samsung had decided to ditch the Snapdragon 810 in favor of an in-house Exynos chip for its upcoming Galaxy S6, because Qualcomm's chip was reportedly facing some overheating issues.

Nevertheless, a number of smartphone makers will still be equipping their new flagships with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810, and the chipmaker has now issued a new press release on Tuesday, Feb. 3, to gloat about its achievements.

The press release mentions LG and Xiaomi, two OEMs that we already knew plan to use the latest Snapdragon 810 for their LG G Flex 2 and the Mi Note, respectively. However, Qualcomm also touts a number of other upcoming devices from other OEMs that will pack the Snapdragon 810, and that's where things get interesting.

Earlier rumors suggested that Microsoft plans to focus primarily on affordable devices, at least in the first half of this year, and it would not launch a high-end Lumia flagship for a good while. If Qualcomm's new announcement is any indication, however, at least one high-end Lumia is approaching its debut.

Among mentions of Motorola, OPPO, and Sony, Qualcomm also notes that its Snapdragon 810 will power Microsoft Lumia devices this year.

"Microsoft and Qualcomm's long standing collaboration has allowed the two companies to offer compelling business, imaging, and entertainment experiences with Lumia smartphones running on Windows Phone," Qualcomm touts in its press release. "We look forward to continuing this relationship to deliver best in class Lumia smartphones, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 processors, and offer an unprecedented combination of processing power, rich multimedia, high-performance graphics and wireless connectivity for our customers."

Qualcomm makes no mention of when exactly the first Snapdragon 810-powered Lumia smartphone will make its debut, but the announcement nonetheless confirms such plans for later this year. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, so stay tuned.
