Sony Xperia Z3+ officially debuts as global version of Xperia Z4 (VIDEO)

The rumored Sony Xperia Z3+ is now finally official, but it's nothing other than the Xperia Z4 handset unveiled last month in Japan.

Expectations were high for Sony's 2015 flagship smartphone, but fans remained mostly confused when Sony quietly unveiled its new Xperia Z4 last month in Japan. Rumors started to emerge suggesting that the Xperia Z4 was in fact not the flagship, as it didn't sport impressive upgrades compared to its Xperia Z3 predecessor.

Not long after, reports claimed that the Xperia Z4 would make its global debut as the Xperia Z3+, which seemed like an appropriate name considering the iterative upgrade over its predecessor. Those rumors turned out to be accurate, as Sony has now officially announced its Xperia Z3+ and it's just a rebranded Xperia Z4.

In terms of specifications, the new Sony Xperia Z3+ retains the same 5.2-inch full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display of its predecessor, as well as the same overall design, albeit with a thinner and lighter form factor.

Under the hood, the Xperia Z3+ packs a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor paired with Adreno 430 graphics and 3GB of RAM. Other specs include a 20.7-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front shooter, and a 2,900 mAh battery that will allegedly last for two days on a single charge. It's also worth pointing out that Sony equipped both the front and rear cameras with mobile image sensors for higher-quality images even in low-light environments. The smartphone should also boast faster connection speeds due to its LTE Cat. 6 and Wi-Fi MIMO support. As expected from a new Sony smartphone, the Xperia Z3+ is also waterproof and dust-resistant.

"Slimmer (6.9mm), lighter (144g) and expertly crafted, Xperia Z3+ continues the Sony design story with discreet, but impressive improvements. Not only is it waterproof and dust-tight (IP65/68) ideal for use in all situations, as a further design refinement Z3+ features a capless USB port making it easier and more convenient to charge your phone," Sony touts in a new press release on Tuesday, May 26. "In addition the magnetic charging pin has been removed, resulting in an overall more seamless and minimalist design. With a shiny finish on the metal frames, tempered glass and rounded edges, Xperia Z3+ is beautiful to look at from any angle and comfortable to hold."

The new Sony Xperia Z3+ is set to hit commercial availability this summer, but the company has yet to provide exact launch and pricing details. Sony should offer additional information closer to release, and we'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more.
