Sony Xperia Z4 flagship smartphone quietly unveiled – Here’s the deal

The much-rumored Sony Xperia Z4 flagship smartphone for 2015 is now finally official, as the company quietly unveiled the handset in Japan.

Sony chose not to introduce its new-generation flagship smartphone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 back in early March, but intensifying rumors indicated that the Xperia Z4 was set to make its debut by the end of this month. The company has indeed taken the wraps off its new Xperia Z4, announcing the device in a press release in Japanese. Sony made no mention of an Xperia Z4 Compact version at this point, nor offered any details regarding the new flagship's international debut.

The new Sony Xperia Z4 sports the same 5.2-inch full HD (1080p) display of its predecessor, but is thinner and lighter and sports notable improvements under the hood compared to the previous Xperia Z3.

The powerful 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor powers the new Xperia Z4, along with 3GB of RAM for a fast and fluid performance. The smartphone comes with 32GB of internal storage capacity, expandable up to 128GB via microSD, and packs one of the largest batteries found on a phone this size - 2,930 mAh. The 5.1-inch Samsung Galaxy S6 has a 2,550 mAh battery, for instance, while the 5-inch HTC One M9 has a 2,840 mAh unit.

In the camera department, the Sony Xperia Z4 sports a 20.7-megapixel rear shooter with a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor and BOINZ image processor, and a wide-angle 5-megapixel selfie cam on the front.

The Sony Xperia Z4 will ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop on board out of the box and rock the highest dust and waterproof ratings, i.e. IP6X and IPX5/IPX8, respectively. In terms of color options, the handset will be available in white, black, copper, and aqua green.

It remains unclear why Sony chose to unveil its new-generation Xperia Z4 flagship so quietly, as OEMs usually launch their latest and greatest devices with much fanfare. As previously mentioned, Sony has yet to provide details regarding a global launch, but should offer additional information shortly. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, such as when the Xperia Z4 smartphone will hit retail, in which markets, and how much it will cost when it does.
