Microsoft Still in the Smartphone Business Despite Nokia Layoffs?

Three years after Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia, the tech giant company is exterminating last remnants of the Finnish tech company. According to Extreme Tech, Microsoft recently announced the termination of 1,850 Nokia employees.

Last year, Microsoft made 7,800 job cuts. The next series of layoffs will be effective in Finland, where 1,350 workers will be made jobless. While, another set of 500 workers will be also terminated from the other countries. It will also close down a research and development site in the country.

However, despite its mass layoffs, Microsoft will still continue to market new devices and develop new products. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has acknowledged that Microsoft still can't win against rivals, like iOS and Android, Mashable reported. Nokia's phone business and its Windows 10 mobile have dropped to 1% on the market share.

Rather than back down from the competition, however, rumors have surfaced about a Windows-powered Surface smartphone Microsoft is, reportedly, developing.

Surface devices became a sign of Microsoft's "reinventing productivity." There is some speculation that a Surface phone may have a chance against the top smartphone device. Jackdaw Research analyst, Jan Dawson said, "There are still lots of companies using Microsoft devices and management software fairly exclusively, so there's likely something of an opportunity there."

Microsoft promised that it will continue to innovate more product devices and all mobile platforms. Microsoft also stated that it will give more details when posting its profit updates this coming July.
