Nintendo NX Release Date Confirmed; To Feature ‘Zelda: Breath of the Wild’, ‘Super Smash Bros’; VR Capability?

The Nintendo NX will be released in March 2017. Several games such as "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" and "Super Smash Bros." will also accompany its debut. There also had been rumors the that mysterious NX will have VR capability.

The March 2017 release was confirmed by Nintendo's financial statement report. They called the NX, a "brand new concept." Unfortunately, little information has been released by the Japanese company about the upcoming console.

Most of the information floating about the NX are mostly conjectures. Some of them even conflict with one another. For example, there have been conflicting ideas whether the NX is composed of two separate consoles and portable devices, or simply a hybrid of these two systems.

The drawings in a recent Nintendo patent application stirred speculations as well, with an illustration featuring a possible controller for the NX or a 3DS update. Initially, it was rumored that the NX is going to be a VR-capable device. However, a recent Bloomberg interview with Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime seemed to have quashed this rumor.

The drawings also indicate that the NX may use cartridges instead of discs for the game. This is not unexpected from Nintendo, since the gaming firm did not entirely abandon them. There are some advantages in using cartridges instead of discs. They are cheaper and can store much data. In contrast to these rumors, however, some are saying that the NX will instead have neither cartridge nor disc, and user would have to download games digitally.

One thing is for certain, however, and that is the fact that the NX will not be as powerful as Microsoft's Xbox Scorpio. At the most, it is speculated that the NX would probably carry the same horsepower as the Sony PlayStation 4. That much has been confirmed by Fils-Aime, who said that Nintendo will concentrate on giving the best content to the users.

Finally, it seems the NX is set to replace the Wii U. Nintendo executives will not say it directly, but they have been dropping hints about letting it go. There are still making Wii U consoles but they are already making less of them now.
