The negative press surrounding the iPhone 7 before its official release really was about just one thing. That is, that Apple did not seem to be making enough changes from the iPhone 6S for the new unit to be more enticing. And now, with the official release of the latest flagship, the public can make an informed decision on whether or not the upgrade is worth it.
iPhone 6S/ iPhone 6S Plus - Specs Review
The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are largely similar to each other. They do, however, differ in size, weight, pixel resolution and battery size.
The iPhone 6S has a 5.44 x 2.64 x 0.28 inch body and weighs just 143 grams. According to Apple, the screen, which is 4.7 inches has a pixel resolution of 1332 x 750 pixels and a battery that should last for up to 10 hours on 3G usage.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 6S Plus sports a 6.23 x 3.07 x 0.29 inch chassis and is 192 grams heavy. The 5.5 inch screen has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, where users can catch up to 12 hours of 3G usage.
The iPhone 6S series comes in Rose Gold, Gold, Silver and Space Gray Options. Both the standard and Plus variant also have 32GB and 128GB internal storage options. In addition, they also share a Retina HD display with 3D touch.
iPhone 7/ iPhone 7 Plus - Specs Introduction
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus also have a lot of things in common. Like its predecessor series, Apple notes that the units differ in size, weight, pixel resolution and battery life.
More specifically, the iPhone 7 is 5.44 x 2.64 x 0.28 inches and comes in at 138 grams. Its 4.7 inch display has a 1334 x 750 pixel resolution, which should work for up to 12 hours on 3G usage.
On the other hand, the larger iPhone 7 Plus is 6.23 x 3.07 x 0.29 inches and is 188 grams. The unit's 5.5 inch screen has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and a battery that will give users as much as 13 hours on 3G.
They do, however, sport the same color choices: Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black and Jet Black. Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus also have the same 32GB, 128GB and 256GB internal storage options - but the Jet Black unit does not carry the 32GB option. The new series from Apple also sports the same Retina HD display.
Key Differences
Very few features have actually been upgraded between the devices.
Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are powered by the A10 chip and have a rear and front camera of 12 megapixels and 7 megapixels respectively. Both also no longer support the standard 3.5mm audio jack and are therefore IP67 water and dust resistant. The battery, camera and storage options have also been improved. Furthermore, more color options have been provided.
The Burning Question: Should The Upgrade Be Made?
From the specs alone, users who are not particular about performance will not see much of a difference between the new iPhone 7 and the iPhone 6S. There really have been very few upgrades made to the iPhone 7 unit - or, at least, not enough to make the upgrade a necessary purchase.
