A week ago, The Coalition held a sneak-peek event for Gears of War 4 which led Mike Rayner, the game's technical director, to confirm that it will feature LAN support for its PC version. Not just that, it also will support cross-play between Xbox One and the PC - uniting the PC master race and console gamers.
Moreover, not only will the upcoming installment include the aforementioned features for its PC version, it was revealed at the affair that it will be set to support, wait for it... split-screen co-op, as reported by GameRant.
Gears of War's current developer, The Coalition officially confirmed the addition of split-screen cooperative game mode for the PC players of the upcoming third-person shooter.
Rayner describes Gears of War 4's features for the PC a 'labor of love' and that the dev team made sure to incorporate split-screen cooperative based on feedback that fans want to bring back the good old split screen games into today's gaming.
Making coop split-screen is not easy to do, obviously, as backed up by Raynor's explanation on why most studios avoid this feature for PC titles:
"From a development standpoint, it is quite difficult to support. We have to deal with multiple inputs, we have to deal with focus, we have to deal with UI placement ... developers have got to put some effort into it to do it right, it's not just something you can tack on."
The good-ol' group couch gaming scene
Bringing back split-screen co-op with Gears of War 4's PC version should make the fans happy, especially after what happened to the sloppy release of the Ulimate Edition. In fact, with the said feature being official in the game, a lot of gamers will probably think about it as another indication that The Coalition and Microsoft are making efforts to stand by its promise to give the PC iteration the best treatment they can. attempting to stand by its word on intending to give the PC version the best treatment possible.
Perhaps the most reassuring news concerning Gears of War 4's split-screen cooperative feature on Xbox One and PC is that it will not be demoted to one specific strand of gameplay. Every mode will offer split-screen capabilities.
