Sony RX100 V Sports The Quickest Autofocus And Improves Sensor For Better Photos

Sony has just made an official announcement regarding the latest addition to its RX100 line of cameras, the RX100 V model DSC-RX100M5. While aesthetically, there are little to no differences, getting inside the camera is a completely different story. The new release boasts of some very impressive improvements over its predecessor.

RX100 V: Specs, Features And System Improvements

According to Digital Trends, the RX100 V sports an all new 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMS sensor with a DRAM chip. Not only does is this an overall improved sensor, but it specifically works well to expand the memory of the unit while improving photo quality. This becomes evident especially when photos are taken at high ISOs.

The more obvious improvement, however, is seen at the autofocus feature of the RX100 V. The device features an innovative new system, called the Fast Hybrid AF, which is the quickest autofocus system that Sony has in any camera in its current production line. In fact, the unit reportedly takes just 0.05 seconds to autofocus.

This is possible because Sony combined two sides of the autofocus system - the phase detection and contrast detection. What results from this are 315 autofocus points within the system. In total, this covers as much as 65 percent of the sensor's surface.

The RX100 V also includes a new feature, called the AF-A. With this, users are able to switch automatically between a continuous shot and a single shot. The camera's BIONZ X image processing engine allows the device to take up to 24 frames per second.

Sony also included a new shutter in the RX100 V, which can take a photo in 1/32,000 of a second. The new shutter should minimize the jello effect of fast moving objects. The device is also capable of taking 4K videos.

RX100 V: Similarities With Its Predecessor, the RX100 IV

As C|Net notes, the RX100 V does have a lot of similarities with the RX100 IV. So while there are features to get used to and take advantage of, there is still a sense of familiarity with the new device. More specifically, the new camera from Sony shares its body, 20.1-megapixel resolution and pop-up viewfinder with its predecessor.
